SARA: How did you become interested in photography especially with the iPhone?
WILEY: Thanks Sara, that is a great question. As we all know technology has changed a great deal in a very short time when we look at cameras. 10 years ago, a large, bulky, and heavy 35mm camera was the way many travelers took photographs. Today, the iPhone can take images that are world class.
SARA: How has the iPhone camera changed the way you travel and document your experiences?
WILEY: As a traveler, I always have my iPhone with me. It helps with navigation, communication, and even translates conversation into a foreign language. It also has a great camera. So wherever I go, my phone is with me, and so is the ability to capture images.
SARA: Do you think there is a role for a camera other than an iPhone? Why or why not?
WILEY: Absolutely. If you need to take telephoto shots, the iPhone is not your best choice. There are numerous cameras that are small and take great photos, some have interchangeable lenses, and for the artistic photographer having advanced controls is a nice option. But, for most photos, the iPhone does a great job.
SARA: What do you believe makes an excellent travel photograph?
WILEY: As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. When you are traveling and you have had a great time, a photograph can capture the moment. This is true of great vistas, wonderful meals, interesting people, or a variety of other events that happen when you travel. Capturing these memories is a great way to re-live the moment and the trip.
SARA: Sometimes when I return from a trip I realize that I haven’t taken enough photographs. Do you have a practice or method in your approach to photography while traveling?
WILEY: I try to take photographs of the events that I had planned and things that caught my eye during the travel. I would rather err on the side of taking too many photographs. I often ask myself, what photo would tell the story of why I went here and what did I see. The other photographs I like taking are those of people. They tell a story of the life, culture, and society.
SARA: Where do you hope to travel next and why? What places were so memorable that you wish to return?
WILEY: Iceland is a photographers dream. It is spectacular in so many ways. One area that is so inspiring is Banff, Canada and the route to Jasper. If you like the Tetons you will love this part of the rockies.
Sara: Wiley, thank you for sharing your expertise and joining me for Travel Talk: Conversations with Experts.
